Setting & Context
"We are LoboStrong"
If it's one thing I can say for certain is that this school truly stands together as one body--one family. Rocky Mountain High School prides itself on its diverse community in terms of interest as they have well over 100 clubs that are lead by student and teacher alike from the "Uku-lobos" club where people learn to play the ukulele and have a sense of community, and all the way to "Bigfoot Club" where students come for hilarious presentations about mysterious cryptids. Lobos of Rocky embody school spirit every day they're at the school, at home, and everywhere they go, which makes it such a great place to be a part of if given the opportunity.
Along with passionate students, the school has passionate teachers and staff members that are there to offer as much support as they can when they can. They make sure that the students have excellent opportunities to learn and grow up to be upstanding community members. The school, itself, offers extensive options in curriculum so students that are attending are bound to find their educational niche within its walls.

Life at Rocky
During my stay at Rocky, I had the opportunity to be present in a TV Announcements class, Videography class and a 2-dimensional Design class. I saw these three classes every day of the week for an hour and half. The TVA class was the capstone for the video editing program, and was primarily student led, so I was mostly there to observe as even my mentor teacher didn't do a lot of instructing there. When it came to the Videography class, the primary focus was the basics of editing and shooting film with camera angles and camera shots. Here they made several different projects that revolved around the use of Adobe Premiere and some work in Adobe After Effects. I was in charge of the 2-dimensional Design class from start to finish and worked on developing a series of lessons that cover light & value and color theory while including aspects of perspective and symbolism. Some of the projects involved the development of a personal heraldic crest, the creation of a grid-based self-portrait, and a custom album cover.
Advocacy Posters for Social Justice |
This lesson focused on the importance of raising awareness for social justice issues that impact our everyday lives. It was designed in mind as a final combination of skills from all the previous assignments to showcase them and see what could be made. The primary focuses involved symbolism, perspective, line quality, shading & value, and color usage with a plethora of concepts pulled from the previous lessons. Students were asked to research a topic of their choosing that they had interest in, that had a personal impact on their lives, or if it was something they wanted to learn about. The important preface to this was that being a very serious and very real topic that any negative connotations in the work or in response to the work of peers could result in a harsh consequence. These topics are no laughing matter and should be treated with the respect they deserve.
Custom Album Cover Art |
Students were asked to use their favorite song or to choose one after narrowing down a list of favorites. The goal was to pull moods, meanings, and emotions from the song that were present in it and not what the song made them feel. This aspect would be used to design a custom album cover utilizing those moods, meanings, and emotions so that the viewer could see the cover art visibly and then in turn hear it in the song itself. The purpose for this lesson was to discuss how color theory can be used to include different meanings and pull different meanings from the way color is used in works of art.
