Hollow Rhythm from Joel Schreiner on Vimeo.
Through the creation of a abstract composition, and a variety of sounds, Hollow Rhythm was inspired by the shape the lines took and how the strokes resembled a seismograph. The sounds were translated from the shape and texture focusing more on deep resonating tones and echoes of what seem to be drums. The steady beat follows the majority of the lines with the denser sections of line are reflected in the resonating tones that sit above the baseline. The composition is read from the bottom up starting in the middle and jumping left to right like that of a seismograph. The darker sections involve layered sounds while echoing the beat in the video with movements, duration, and placement.
The composition was drawn prior to knowing its purpose, and used as the base for the sound and correlating video. Most of the sounds used were: an Arizona tea jug, touchpad clicks, snaps, bottles, a viola, and a recorder. A variety of effects were added, as well, to give the sounds an echoed feel to enhance the resonation and feel.
