Standard V Reflection
ELEMENT A: Teachers promote professional growth for all educators and collaborate with their colleagues to improve the school community and the teaching profession.
This was by far probably the most difficult one to keep track of as there isn't a lot of room or time to collaborate when there were so many other things that needed to be done. There were times, however, that I was able to do a little bit of this, which mainly happened during department meetings and staff meetings.
One example was when we were discussing the use of a google drive to share information while, also, being able to keep it as a working archive. I was able to offer a little bit of advice on how the shared drive works as a box where you can store and access things for as long as you need to and that you can easily just share it with people to give them access to everything that's inside. It's an efficient service, similar to Dropbox, and links with several of the programs or features already implemented in the school.
Another example was when I was able to assist in the ideation for possible PBL lessons, after the information was presented by the grade leaders. They were looking for ways that chemistry could be connected to the real world and what the students could do as a project. In our table group, we talked about different ways this could be approached and what things would work with what the teachers were wanting to achieve for the lesson.

ELEMENT B: Teachers demonstrate high standards for professional conduct.
This was something I did during every project where I'd outline the upcoming days and future things, but this one in particular was about the seriousness in the final project's subject matter.
When it came time to start preparing for this, I took time near the end of the class to sit them down and lay out the expectations of how they are to conduct themselves during this project. Since it was dealing with social justice topics, I wanted to make sure that the students were aware of how serious this was and that if they were to make a joke of it or not take things seriously that they would fail. Not so much to make sure they did their work, but to make sure that they were aware of how serious of a topic this would be considering it impacts everybody every single day. The main point was that this was something present in everybody's lives and that they shouldn't make light of it. I expected them to respect what people went through and if they failed to do so, then there would be consequences with how important these topics are. |
